Brisbane, Australia, 4-7 November 2009, Regional Launch Workshop of IWC as Knowledge Hub for Healthy Rivers and Aquatic Ecosystems

The International WaterCentre (IWC), in collaboration with ADB, is organizing a regional launch workshop of the IWC on 4-7 November 2009 in Brisbane, Australia. The event will launch IWC as the knowledge hub for healthy rivers and aquatic ecosystems and will provide an excellent opportunity for prospective clients of the hub to share lessons learned and challenges on river health assessment and improvement, as well as expectations for the knowledge and capacity development services to be offered by IWC. Regional and national partners, including other knowledge hubs, and prospective clients are invited to attend the launch workshop and to advise on IWC's operation, networking, scope of services, and delivery of useful services.

Incheon and Daejeon, Korea, 19-22 August 2009, Launch of Knowledge Hub on Water Quality Management in River Basins, and Regional Workshop on Water Quality Management in River Basins: Keys for Success

K-water, in collaboration with ADB, organized a Workshop on Water Quality Management in River Basins on 19-22 August 2009 in Incheon and Daejeon in Korea to launch its hub for water quality management in river basins. Clients from 15 countries shared experiences from their ongoing work to improve water quality in their respective river basins, highlighted issues, initiatives, keys for success, expectations for K-water hub services, and proposed collaboration with the hub. A Letter of Intent (LOI) between K-water and ADB was signed for US$6 million worth of collaboration to support Indonesia's Citarum river water resources investment program.

Beijing, China, 27 July — 3 August, International Advanced Training Workshop on Integrated River Basin Management

51 participants from 18 countries joined an International Advanced Training Workshop on Integrated River Basin Management  organized by the IRTCES hub, in cooperation with UNESCO. Water engineers, managers, and decision-makers have improved their professional theory and knowledge on integrated river basin management, water resources management, water and soil conservation, and river ecology and measures restoration through lectures and exchange of thoughts and experiences during this one week program. The IWRM Guidelines at River Basin Level were introduced by the NARBO Secretariat to raise awareness and to facilitate the practical implementation of IWRM at the river basin level. Marina Barrage, Singapore, 26 June 2009, APWF Governing Council Endorses 4 Additional Hubs

The APWF's Governing Council has endorsed 4 new APWF Regional Water KnowledgeHubs during its 5th Governing Council meeting held on 26 June 2009 at the Marina Barrage in Singapore. The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI), the Institute for Global Environment Strategies (IGES), the Mekong River Commission Secretariat (MRCS), and the Japan Sanitation Consortium (JSC) were endorsed as knowledge hubsfor water and climate change adaptation in South Asia, groundwater management, transboundary water resources management, and sanitation, respectively. The four topics are of great importance to achieving water security in the region and were also endorsed by the APWF KnowledgeHubs in 2008. The APWF KnowledgeHubs congratulates and welcome the new knowledge hubs as centers of excellence in promoting knowledge sharing and championing feasible solutions for its priority water topics.

Singapore, 24 June 2009, 1st Annual Progress Review Meeting of APWF KnowledgeHubs

APWF regional knowledge hubs met for their 1st Annual Progress Review Meeting in 24 June 2009 at PUB WaterHub in Singapore. The meeting was attended by 35 participants from hubs, the APWF Governing Council, APWF Secretariat, and support organizations ADB and UNESCO-IHE. The hub participants exchanged experience and lessons learned from progress in their first year of operations, and challenges and opportunities ahead in the three key result areas of catering to client demand, delivering results, and managing the networking process. Progress was generally encouraging, and collaboration among the hubs will increase with the help of the KnowledgeHubs secretariat, which is being established in Manila with ADB support. Three candidate hubs had their business plans peer reviewed. These are the Mekong River Commission Secretariat (MRCS) for transboundary water resources management, the Institute for Global Environment Strategies (IGES) for groundwater management, and the Japan Sanitation Consortium (JSC) for sanitation. The meeting made a recommendation for their endorsement by the APWF Governing Council. An APWF KnowledgeHubs Steering Committee was also established to facilitate communication and collaboration among hubs, secretariat, and supporting organizations, advise the secretariat in its work, demonstrate leadership in good networking practice, and help prepare KnowledgeHubs meetings.

Putrajaya, Malaysia, 26-28 May 2009, Workshop on Developing Water and Climate Change Adaptation Guidelines

The NAHRIM hub organized a 3-day Workshop on Developing Water and Climate Change Adaptation Guidelines on 26-28 May 2009 in Malaysia. The meeting kicked off the hub's preparation of guidelines for projections and adaptation in basins and cities. The participants also discussed regional cooperation initiatives.

Solo, Indonesia, 27 April – 1 May 2009, Regional Launch Workshop of the Center for River Basin Organizations and Management (CRBOM)

160 clients and partners from 18 countries joined a workshop to launch CRBOM as the new regional knowledge hub for river basin organizations and management, set up by Indonesia's Ministry of Public Works. The meeting shared experiences in setting up basin councils with government and civil society members.

Bangkok, 19-21 January 2009, Launch of Knowledge Hub on Irrigation Service Reform

The International Water Management Institute (IWMI) together with FAO RAP launched the Asia Pacific Water Forum’s Knowledge Hub for Irrigation Service Reform during a workshop held in Bangkok from the 19th to 21st January 2009. This hub, will work towards the modernization of irrigation in the region.

1-5 December, 2008, Launch of Knowledge Hub on Water and Climate Change Adaptation in Southeast Asia, and Regional Workshop on Developing Partnerships for Water and Climate Change Adaptation

The goal of the workshop is to develop a strategy that would enable the region to come out with action plans on capacity building for climate change projection and adaptation leading to a series of climate change projection exercises and capacity building workshops and training.

15-17 October, 2008, Regional Meeting on Hydro-informatics and Developing Knowledge Hub’s Networks, Zhengzhou, People’s Republic of China

Asia-Pacific Water Forum’s regional water knowledge hubs, development partners, and water experts on decision-support systems will discuss how hydro-informatics can be introduced or improved in Asia’s river basins. The Center for Hydro-informatics in River Basins hosted by the Yellow River Conservancy Commission will be launched as the regional water knowledge hub on the topic of decision-support systems for river basin management. Business plans of existing and candidate regional water hubs will be presented and reviewed.

SIWW Workshop on "New Concepts in Integrated Management of the Urban Water Cycle

During the Singapore International Water Week, a workshop is being organized on state-of-the-art concepts in urban water management and adaptation/technology transfer of these concepts to regional mega-cities. A specific focus of the workshop will be on the successes and future plans of Singapore as a model for developing countries/countries in transition in the region of Asia and mega-cities such as Jakarta, Manila, and Bangkok. The workshop topics will span technologies, infrastructure, modeling, integration, alternative sources/reuse, technology transfer, and economic/financial aspects. Senior-level participants are being invited from regional Asia countries (including Indonesia, Philippines, Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, Thailand, Malaysia etc) plus invited participants from PUB, the Singapore water industry, and other global water companies active in the region. The workshop is being coordinated with other SIWW events involving complimentary concepts (e.g., the SIWW track on Cities of the Future). A further intent of the workshop is to provide networking opportunities between participants from developing countries/countries in transition and participants from developed countries, with formulation of a follow-up plan for knowledge dissemination and training.
