Japan Sanitation ConsortiumRegional Water Knowledge Hub for Sanitation

JSC’s Expertise

The Japan Sanitation Consortium (JSC) was established in 2009 to become the Knowledge Hub for sanitation and promote the development of basic sanitation (toilets), on-site sanitation systems (including night soil collection and treatment system) and sewerage systems in the Asia-Pacific region. JSC is a unique organization that brings together Japan's know-how and expertise in wastewater management for both on-site and off-site sanitation. JSC gathers, through its four member organizations—the agencies in charge of wastewater, sludge and night-soil management in Japan—a comprehensive knowledge and experience in policy making, management system, operation and maintenance, enhanced by advanced technology such as Johkasou for on-site domestic wastewater treatment.

JSC’s Services

The purpose of JSC activities is to support the countries of the Asia-Pacific region with low access to sanitation and to enable them acquiring the knowledge and capacity to develop and diffuse sanitation facilities, for the improvement of public health and the reduction of water pollution. JSC aims to offer each country solutions and management strategies to tackle their sanitation challenges, including the provision of a matrix for appropriate technology selection to best suit local conditions and needs. In addition, to promote the development of policies, capability and investment for sanitation, JSC aspires to consolidate, disseminate and share knowledge as well as information through active collaboration with the Japanese government, international donor organizations and the countries of the Asia-Pacific region. As the operating body of the APWF's Knowledge Hub for sanitation, JSC provides the following services:

  • Networking: establishing and operating an information network on sanitation with the related organizations in each country of the Asia-Pacific region, in collaboration with international donor organizations
  • Information gathering: creating a sanitation database for the Asia-Pacific region, and conducting research for sanitation improvement with team members from government, industry and academia
  • Knowledge dissemination and information sharing: organizing international seminars and conferences to share knowledge, information and experiences in the sanitation field
  • Support to international donor organizations (ADB, JICA, UNICEF, WORLD BANK, UN-HABITAT, etc.) conducting sanitation related training courses, field investigations; providing advice for the selection of appropriate technologies, and assistance through experts to projects and operations developed by international donor organizations
  • Coordinating actions with UNICEF and WTO (World Toilet Organization)
